Studies as early as the 1920s showed that Botox inhibits the activity of motor and parasympathetic nerve endings, which was confirmed several decades later, in the 1970s. The mechanism was confirmed experimentally and it is now believed that Botox acts on nerve endings, reducing muscle contractions through the inhibition of acetylcholine (Brin MF et al. Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) mechanism of action Medicine (Baltimore) 2023 Jul 1;102(S1):e32372). In fact, the mechanisms for the successful treatment of chronic migraine and overactive bladder with Botox have been identified. Several clinical studies have also identified the benefits of Botox in major depression, hyperhidrosis and anal fissures.
