Botox has been used for decades for aesthetic purposes. It inhibits the uptake of acetylcholine, resulting in muscle paralysis for the treatment of wrinkles in the middle of the brow, periorbital and generally throughout the face with microBotox-type techniques. Two Botox products have been approved for aesthetic procedures in the US and Europe, Botox and Dysport. A new article (Sattler. G et al. Current and future botulinum neurotoxin type A preparations in aesthetics: a literature review. J Drugs Dermatol. 2010 Sep 9(9):1065-71) examines the pharmacological and clinical profiles of Botox preparations currently available with success.
