Botox works by blocking acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, resulting in muscle paralysis. There are several Botox substances, but the most extensively studied is onabotulinum toxin A. A new article (Brennan A et al. Botulinum toxin in women's health: An update. Maturitas 2019 Jan:119:21-24) describes three of the common clinical applications of Botox related to women's health: the management of symptoms of overactive bladder, chronic migraine, and facial wrinkles. Its safety and efficacy have been fully demonstrated.
