Injection lipolysis for localized fat reduction was first discovered in the 1980s. A new study (Hasengschwandtner F et al. Injection lipolysis for effective reduction of localized fat in place of minor surgical lipoplasty. Aesthet Surg J 2006 Mar-Apr;26(2):125-30) demonstrated the effectiveness of injection lipolysis in reducing fat in the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, and face. Using the correct technique, injection lipolysis is a safe and effective alternative to liposuction, especially in patients who cannot undergo surgery. It is not a weight loss method or a treatment for obesity, and the ideal patient is one with small fat deposits that cannot be reduced by exercise or diet.
