Migraine is one of the most common types of headache and the second most common cause of neurological disorders, with an incidence of approximately 15% in the general population. A new study (Shaterian N et al. Botox (OnabotulinumtoxinA) for Treatment of Migraine Symptoms: A Systematic Review.Pain Res Manag 2022 Mar 31:2022:3284446) evaluated the effect of Botox/Dysport on migraine attack duration/intensity and potential injection sites.
A total of 24 articles were included in the study. It was shown that the use of Botox/Dysport in chronic migraine reduces the frequency of migraine attacks per month, pain intensity, medication use, emergency room visits, and migraine-related disability. Botox/Dysport was well tolerated with improved performance and better quality of life. In addition, the use of Botox/Dysport in people with vestibular migraine (migraine vertigo) reduces the frequency of migraines and improves the disability caused by migraine headaches. Finally, the use of Botox/Dysport reduces the frequency of migraine attacks per month in people with chronic resistant migraine.
In conclusion, the use of Botox/Dysport is a cost-effective option for the treatment of various types of migraines, including chronic, episodic, unilateral, and vestibular types. It can reduce the frequency of migraine attacks per month and reduce the severity of pain.
